Members of Samsung Engineering!
A new year filled with hope has arrived.
I would like to convey my deepest gratitude to all members of Samsung Engineering for achieving a strong above-target performance, thereby enhancing global competitiveness and brand value of the company.
As we begin this year with new hope and determination, I expect that we can grow together united in one mind, heading to the same direction.
Respected members!
In the present and near future, the market of both home and abroad, customers and the business environment will see changes in mega-scale.
Moreover against this backdrop, ever more fierce competitions are taking place to secure capital, resources and talents.
Businesses are divided into nano-scale, becoming more and more specialized.
Also changes are taking place so rapidly that in the future, changes occurring in one year will be equivalent to those of more than ten years in the past.
No global company will be able to survive if it fails to adjust to this speed of change.
Thus we have to stand in the middle of these changes and improve our capabilities to respond to and manage these changes.
When we think of future uncertainties as challenging opportunities rather than risks and make bold steps forward by arming ourselves with differentiating competitiveness, we will move one step closer to achieving the goal of becoming a global leader.
In 2008 we will see ever more dramatic changes home and abroad.
Under the management policy of ¡®Creative Innovation and Challenging Spirit,¡¯I would like to propose 'Simultaneous practice of Scale-up & Speed-up' as the subject of management in order to turn intensifying specialization into high-quality integration based on leadership.
Through Innovation Phases ¥° and ¥±, we have strengthened our basis and expanded business execution capabilities.
But we must not be content with our current status.
Let us upgrade our capability to match the enlarged scale of the company and thereby strike a balance between qualitative and quantitative scale and at the same time get speedier.
We need to secure creativity, which is the key competitiveness of future and strengthen our challenging spirit to bring about sustained growth, while pursuing speedier implementation.
Because only then, we will be able to achieve the goal of becoming the world¡¯s top engineering company by 2015.
To realize ¡°Vision 2015,¡±I would like to promote the following four major implementing tasks in 2008.
First, let us enhance our creative marketing capability.
In the global arena, let us link all our markets, customers, products and capability so as to systemize them into an integrated capability framework.
Then let us turn this into a unique brand of our own to be used as a differentiated marketing point.
Furthermore, let us strengthen our marketing activities at contact point with our customers.
Let us create a culture where all members pay close attention to the changes in the global market, collect real-time information and study in order to create viable business opportunities.
In addition the best way for marketing is doing right and well in project execution.
When all members in this company join their efforts and perform assigned jobs in a creative manner, which itself becomes an effective marketing activity, we will realize greater brand and customer value.
Second, let us accelerate our pace to find new growth engines and business opportunities.
The engineering business offers an unparalleled potential for scalability.
And this opportunity can be found worldwide.
Value chain can be expanded indefinitely depending on your business imagination and creativity.
Horizontally speaking, we can expand to new products such as LNG, offshore, steel, water business, while vertically we can find business chance in existing value chain and project execution procedure.
Procurement, say, can begin development of raw material or Q-HSE can expand its business model to deal with external customers.
In addition to this effort, if we capitalize on our existing integration ability to work on macro-level management environment study, feasibility study and industrial value chain study, while adding our pioneering organizational culture to this process, we can further accelerate our drive to explore new growth engine.
Third, let us dramatically sharpen a competitive edge of our project execution.
This imperative goal requires us to continuously attract global best minds based on merits and regardless of individual nationality.
In addition, we should never stop exerting ourselves to become a leader armed with expertise and integration ability.
In the meantime, we need to make smooth vertical and horizontal communication skills our forte.
System and infrastructure are already in place enabling communications between internal functions, between head office and field operations, and between subcontractors.
Let¡¯s make much effective use of this infrastructure and have real-time communication so that we can acquire an ability to deliver the best plant in the globe.
Also we should continue with the expansion of our global presence and network, and glocalization deeply embedded in localization.
Though we have never stopped reining in on innovation drive with Six Sigma improvement, time has come for us to find and take much aggressive and innovative action to change ourselves and the organization.
Such action could be, for example, delivering mega project, establishing simulation system and optimal earlier completion model, expanding global market share and drastically improving work procedures.
Fourth, let us make global organizational culture firmly take root.
Samsung Engineering is already a global company.
However, we have seriously questioned ourselves whether our inside and our thinking are truly global.
What is global organizational culture? It can be summed up as openness, self-regulation, diversity and transparency.
An organization where a person, as long as he is capable, can strive oneself and make open communication, unhindered by individual nationality.
An organization where an individual goes after one¡¯s vision, which also leads to the realization of that organization¡¯s vision.
An organization where there is merit based performance evaluation and a clear reward system. An organization where free communication in English is possible. An organization where idea continuously flows and difference is accepted.
This is the picture of the global organization that we always dream of.
We have to make good DNAs, such as LCC based organizational culture, integration leadership, expertise, aggressiveness, customer-orientedness part of Samsung Engineering.
