Foreign Registration procedure
Foreign registration
- Foreigners intending to stay in Korea for more than 90 days after entry
- Acquired foreign nationality by lossing Korean nationality, or where foreigners born in Korea are given
residence status and intend to stay for more than 90 days from the time they are born
- Exceptions to foreign registration - The following are exempt from registering as foreigners
- Those carrying out diplomacy, official missions, agreements and their family members (A-1, A-2, A-3) - Those undertaking diplomatic, industrial, or other important duties for the national security and their family members, and other foreigners found to be unnecessary to register as foreigners by the Minister of Justice - Foreigners from Canada intending to stay for less than 6 months and carry out the following activities-> Culture/Arts (D-1), Religious Works (D-6), Visit&Stay with family (F-1), Family dependency (F-3), others (G-1)
Registration period
- Foreigners intending to stay for more than 90 days in Korea after entry

- Foreigners with permission granted for status to stay or change of status

3. Foreign registration card issuance/re-issuance/grant |

Foreign registration card issuance
- Foreign registration cards are issued at the Immigration Office under appropriate jurisdiction
Foreign registration card re-issuance
- Reasons for re-issuance
- Lost or stolen registration cards - Damaged registration cards - Lack of space for necessary items to be displayed - Changes of particulars of Foreign registration card (name, sex, birth date and nationality)
- Application for re-issuance must be made within 14 days of the above reasons
- Document requirements for re-issuance
- Application form for re-issuance of foreign registration card - Document stating reason for re-issuance application (where lost) - 1 color photo (3cm x 4cm) - Old registration card (where registration card is unusable due to tear and/or wear, lack of space , or change of details arise as per Article 35 Section 1 of the Act) - Fee: KRW 10,000 (Government Revenue Stamp)
- Re-issuance location: Immigration Office having the jurisdiction over the place of your stay
Foreign registration card for separate issuance
- Foreigners applicable to the following must receive separately issued foreign registration cards.
- Foreigners who are listed as accompaniments to their parents or legal guardians on their registration cards, and have reached 17 years of age - Due to departure or other such reasons of their parents, wishing to issue separated foreign registration cards.
- Separate applications for issuance of foreign registration cards must be made within 60 days
of reaching 17 years of age.

4. Foreign registration card return/carry/present |
Reasons for returning foreign registration cards
- The foreign registration card must be returned to the Immigration Office upon following reasons
- Final departure of registered foreigner - Where the registered foreigner abandon their foreign citizenship and acquires Korean nationality - Upon the registered foreigner¡¯s death - Where the registered foreigner falls into the foreign registration exemption category
Return period for foreign registration cards
- Final departing foreigners, upon departure
- Where Korean nationality acquired, within 14 days since the nationality is acquired.
- The person, spouse, parents, or agent of permission applications - Korean nationality verification certificate, lost foreign nationality verification certificate must be submitted with the returned foreign registration card
- Upon death
- Spouse, parents or agent of permission applications. Administrator or owner of the location, building or land where the death occurs - Within 14 days of acknowledgement of the death or within 30 days of the death - Medical report or inquest report, or other death verification documents must be submitted with the returned foreign registration card
- Penalties will be payable where the registrations are not returned within the specified period
Foreign registration card carriage and/or present
- All foreigners while in Korea, should always carry with you a travel document and an
alien registration card. (Foreigners under the age of 17 are exempt from this duty)
- All foreigners must comply with requests by immigration officers or other such public officers
(including public administrators of city, province, town) to display passports and foreign registration cards, upon performing their official duties. (registration related duties)
- When asked to present passports and registration cards, penalties will be applied to those
who do not comply with persuant to Immigration Act 27.

5. Reporting changes of particulars of foreign registration card |
Reporting changes of particulars of foreign registration card
When the following causes arise for foreigners who have registered as foreigners, the changes to the registration details must be reported to the Immigration Office having the jurisdiction
Causes to report for changes of particulars of foreign registration card
- When the name, sex, date of birth or nationality of the foreigners change
- When the passport number, date of issuance or expiry date changes
- When changes to the organizations (or name changes) that Culture/Arts (D-1), study (D-2), general training
(D-4) status foreigners belong to are made
- When changes to the organizations (or name changes) that Press coverage (D-5),
religious works (D-6), Intra-company transfer (D-7), treaty investment (D-8) , treaty trade (D-9) status foreigners belong to are made
Method of reporting changes of particulars of foreign registration card
- In person or by the agent representing the person may report to the jurisdictional Immigration Office by
submitting appropriate documents

Notes
- Penalties are payable as found in breach of Immigration Act Article 35, where foreigners registered as
a foreigner does not report to the Immigration Office having the jurisdiction of the changes of particulars of foreign registration card within 14 days

6. Procedure of Permission for Extension of Stay |

Procedure of Permission for Extension of Stay
Permission for Extension of Stay
- In case of expiration of permission of stay, the foreigner shall receive permission for extension
of stay if he/she desires to stay continuously in Korea
Application Period for Extension
- The foreigner shall apply before 2 months from the current expiration date to the expiration date.
- In case of applying for the extension after the expiration date, the individual shall pay the penalty
according to Article 25 of Immigration Act.
How to apply for permission for extension of stay
- Principal or principal¡¯s agent shall prepare the required documents (See the documents by the
qualification) to the Immigration Office having the jurisdiction
